Furnace occasionally lights then kicks off

It was -17 degrees outside with the wind blowing 30-40 mph.  We were boondocking in a parking lot because the Campground we were going to stay at, we couldn’t see the roads and were afraid of driving into a ditch.

At 4am, we were wakened by a chirp from the CO alarm. It was cold in the Mirada, about 50 deg.

I checked the furnace, the blower was running slowly and there was no heat. A check of the battery and it showed 8 volts.  That’s why the CO alarm was doing an occasional chirp, low voltage. Continue reading “Furnace occasionally lights then kicks off”

RV Trimark door latch broke

We had just finished a road trip and were cleaning out the Mirada, when we went to open the door, it wouldn’t open!!

The door wasn’t locked and the handle felt normal, but it wouldn’t open. We were trapped inside.

I tried to take the inside door mechanism off  by removing the two screws, but I couldn’t get it off. I didn’t want to force or pry anything (yet) .

NOTE  – The inside cover would have come off if I had just pried a little. Continue reading “RV Trimark door latch broke”

Using our home Dishnet receiver while on the road

Traveling with our home Dishnet 322 receiver.

Many RVers travel the country roughing it with a satellite TV receiver.   Although most of these travelers have a  dedicated receiver / antenna system while traveling, we simply pack up our home receiver, and hit the road. Why not, no ones at home watching the home satellite, so why not use the home receiver while on the road. Its already paid for, so no extra fees for a different reciever or any pay-as-you-go plan fees.

Modify Screen Door to a magnetic catch

ScreenDoor_6The original screen door latch on my Coachman Mirada was not user friendly.

On nice days we’d leave the exterior door open and kept the screen door closed.  Unfortunately, when we wanted to go in or out, it was a real PITA  getting the screen door open and was basically a 5 step process:

  1. Slide the latch cover open.
  2. Release the latch.
  3. Push the door open
  4. Slide the latch cover closed so bugs don’t get in.
  5. Close the door.

ALSO – The cheesy plastic thing to grab the door is easily broken and a real live honest to goodness handle is whats needed.

Install new Digital furnace thermostat

Thermostat_3I had a very difficult time seeing and setting the original mechanical thermostat, so the last time I passed through Menards, I looked at thermostats to replace it.

I found a simple, non-programmable digital thermostat for $18.  a LUX model DHM 110, non-programmable thermostat.  PERFECT. Continue reading “Install new Digital furnace thermostat”

HOW TO – city water and water pump system operations

WaterPanel_1The Coachman Mirada has an interesting water system valve panel that pretty much allows you to do anything.  The panel has four little pictographs that show the valve positions needed to perform several functions, but the manual doesn’t describe the  connections and corresponding valve settings required to perform 5 common functions. AC switch controls AC compressor regardless of MODE switch

AC_Switch_2I’m like the way Japanese cars allow you select the A/C system with a separate button, regardless of the heater / AC mode selector switch. (They do not allow me to turn off the AC when in defrost mode,  even though I would like to be able to do that)

The Evans controller gave me no options on if I want to run the AC or not. It turned on the AC compressor for several MODEs, including the “VENT” mode. I’m not sure why they do this, as when in the AC mode,  the vents are selected,  so why did they want to run the AC when VENTS are selected?
